My artistic photography of New York are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers in the city.
New York is a very exciting place for me to be. If I'm not in Europe, this is my go-to place for inspiration because New Yorkers are so creative. I have spent many hours walking/observing/shooting and find them to be fearless and inventive in the way they dress and the way they express creatively, I am inspired by this courage and originality. The images I have captured here are based upon these feelings.
Bergdorf Goodman is truly one of my favorite places to capture window reflections. I remember a few years ago watching "Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorfs" and delighted in the fact that a large part of the movie was dedicated to Bergdorf's window designer David Hoey, who describes himself as "part architect, part cake designer." His window displays are truly magical and a source of much of my work.
This artistic photography of Tokyo are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers in Tokyo.
Shooting in Tokyo was an extraordinary experience for me. While there were quite a few amazing architectural wonders, for the most part I was a bit daunted by the large number of office buildings being reflected back into the window displays I was shooting. It took me a day or so to get my bearings and then the magic happened in the Ginza, where I experienced the MITSUKOSHI/ISETAN campaign and the wonders of their windows. In particular there was a theme in the displays using "lips" in creative ways, with messages written in Katakana on the glass. I visited their stores in other "prefects", resulting in a great collection of window reflections.
"The seasons sharpen your senses.
Listen. Breathe in. Look more closely.
Focus on a taste, luxuriate in a texture.
Nature makes us more aware.
This sensitivity guides us in all we do.
Our notion of hospitality, the importance
of each moment we share with a customer.
Each carefully chosen item, in this place
dedicated to the art of the experience.
At Isetan Mitsukoshi, we bring perfection
to the smallest detail. Come feel the thrill
of a new world so welcoming it feels
like home.
this is japan."
From there, more great stores such as Bvlgari, Cartier, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Kloka, Tag Heuer, provided me with great window displays to work with during my time in Tokyo.
This artistic photography of Italy are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers in each of these cities.
The window reflections I have created as I’ve traveled through different parts of Italy vary greatly from town to town. As I’ve soaked in the beauty and personality of each place, I have strived to create reflections that capture the design elements of their particular displays while reflecting the unique architectural elements that are specific, and often recognizable to each place.
I spend a lot of time in Italy, as one of my daughters has lived there since 2012. I have a wonderful collection of window reflections and have enjoyed experiencing how different the window displays are in each of the small towns and cities I have spent time in. From the high fashion of Milan, Turin and Rome to the street of antique stores in Santo Spirito, Florence and others in Bologna, Treviso, Lake Como and Verona, the window displays and styles are very different.
This artistic photography of the international fashion houses and Las Vegas are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers as they develop a theme that has been defined and orchestrated between their companies internationally. It is always so much fun for me to see an interpretation of the campaign, and its subtle variations, one one city to the next.
Most of my travels revolve around shooting in the most fashionable districts of a city where the great Fashion Houses are represented. For clients who love a certain designer, selecting an image from this collection can be meaningful, especially if it was taken in a favorite city!
The artistic photography of these abstract objects are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers from my travels.
I love cropping tightly on my images in post production, focusing on the abstract shapes and patterns created in the reflections of the displays.
I have images that are dense with dynamic, graphic lines, images that are fluid and colorful, and others that are atmospheric and magical making them absorbing and complex.
These artistic photographs of Paris, Vienna, and Barcelona, are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers fom my travels as I seek to add to the Worlds within Worlds collection.
One of my favorite images in Paris is one that almost didn't happen. I was walking along the Place Vendôme and stopped to photograph something that I thought was interesting. It wasn't until I got home and began my editing process that I discovered a) the image wasn't that interesting after all! and b) what actually was of interest, was in the far left, top corner of the image. It was the eye of a poster in the next window that literally, if I had shifted my stance to one side, would have been blocked by the window frame, and never would have happened. That's where the "magic" comes in and I am so grateful!
Other favorites are the L'Opera Repetto images I created during my first trip to Paris. They were the very first window reflections I took without knowing I was doing it. When I got home, I realized what I had and have been intentionally building the "Worlds within Worlds" Collection since then. Surprisingly, there are times when that is a challenge and I walk away with only a few images for the collection. That was the case in Barcelona recently, where wide boulevards made the reflections back into the displays less interesting. It is a reminder that with the retail industry changing rapidly and brick and mortar stores closing, my work will become even more unique. For example, the images I created from the Barney's Christmas window displays, in 2013 will never happen again!
The artistic photographs I have created in this grouping from Toronto, Chicago, & San Francisco are "window reflections" I have found as I spent time in these cities. As always, I seek to focus on the window displays unique to each place, while capturing the architectural elements of the street, so they reflect back into the images, making them recognizable to some and magical to others.
I am from Toronto and when I return to visit family I love spending time along Queen Street where I have taken some really cool images, one of which I use a lot in my marketing materials!
I was briefly in both Chicago and San Francisco, and need to return to do some more shooting, as there are so many wonderful areas I have yet to explore.
This artistic photography of Sarasota & Palm Beach, Florida, are "reflections" from the architectural elements of the street back into the window displays of some of the most talented and inspiring designers in my part of the world.
Sarasota has been my home since the mid 80’s, when I moved here from Toronto. It is the base from which I create in all ways, both commercially and artistically. I live downtown and love to wander different streets as I make my way to favorite destinations. It is exciting to discover new window reflections along the way to add to the collection.
Palm Beach continues to be a source of amazing imagery. High end fashion meets Addison Mizner architecture, coupled with Palm trees - I love the effect and each time I go, create new work, several of which I especially love, and have hanging in my home.
This collection of iconic image photography was taken around the world and captures both well-known and obscure pieces from artistic angles and perspectives.
When I am not focused on creating images for my "World within Worlds" Collection, I am passionate about capturing the beauty that I see, the beauty that feeds my heart. That beauty is architectural and sculptural found in cities, towns and gardens. I surround myself with these images, as it makes it easier to come home. Wherever my eye travels in my space, I see this beauty. In particular, I love the Madonnelle di Roma. The Madonna's of Rome that grace every Piazza. I love the Bernini angels in Rome and the Baroque angels in the Basilica's, the cherubs of the Piazza Navona and the angels on top of Chiesa di S. Andrea della Valle. I have images of Florence's Boboli Gardens in late winter that are so beautiful, as well as angels that adorn buildings like the Court of Justice on Piazza San Firenze. Venice has wonderful “Madonnelle”, as do other towns in Northern Italy, and I love to come across them unexpectedly. At some point I will do a series on just these.
I also have countless images of Haussmann's beautiful architecture in Paris; images of Post Alexandre 111, L'Opera, Paris's gardens and sculptures, monuments and private moments, as well as now priceless, to me, images of Notre Dome. Also too, iconic images of the Seine in Paris, the Arno in Florence, the Tibor in Rome, and the Adige in Verona, that capture the essence of the light, that makes the heart of an artist sing.
